Rounds are different locations in which the Grand Battles happen. In each round, (normally) one player is eliminated, and their character's death is written into the story. At this point, the Grandmaster enacts a scene change, and the remaining contestants go through the same rigmarole all over again.
In some instances, rounds from different battles may be in the same location (though usually with barriers that prevent direct interaction between the characters). Pop-Up Land and Escheresque are one example of this.
Some rounds have a curious mechanic, or even a win/lose condition (such as the sticky bomb in Free Falling). Some are even based off MSPAFAs, with intricately pre-built worlds with extensive backstory; while others may be a relatively generic setting, where the host is sparse on specifics but gives an overarching theme for the Round, whether it be "spoooky forest", "trap-filled military base", "tropical volcanic island" or even "pen-and-ink castle". In these types of settings, sticking to (or in some cases, working around) the theme when dreaming up the antagonistic nature of the natives, or the environment, is critical.
